Aesthetics of Access in Performance and Dance

This exchange format will focus on the «Aesthetics of Access» in performance and dance, with choreographer and disability advocate Alessandro Schiattarella joining as an expert guest. The session will begin with an introduction to his work, tracing his artistic journey and approach, and offering a brief explanation of ableism as context. Alessandro will then present his most recent projects, illustrating his creative process through photos and videos, with particular attention to how he applies the «Aesthetics of Access» in his practice.

After the presentation, participants will be invited to ask questions and share ideas from their own projects or interests in accessibility. The session will end with a collaborative discussion, offering a space to exchange knowledge, reflect on shared experiences, and explore questions in greater depth.

Alessandro Schiattarella is a Swiss-Neapolitan choreographer, performer, and disability advocate based in Basel. After an international career as a solo dancer, he developed his own choreographic language, shaped by his lived experience with Hirayama disease and a commitment to anti-ableist aesthetics.

His work explores the politics of the body, challenging normative ideals of ability and presence. Blending dance, text, sound, and spatial experimentation, his interdisciplinary pieces center care, fragility, and interdependence as both artistic and political values. His creations are presented internationally, in theaters, site-specific locations, and festival contexts.

Since 2024, he has been Artistic Co-Director of disframe, the funding and networking project of the Migros-Kulturprozent for inclusive cultural practice. In this role, he works to expand accessibility and foster systemic change by supporting artists and curators engaged with disability discourse.
